Refurbished Laptops?

Hi, has anyone purchased a refurbished/reconditioned laptop from the pc world/currys/dixons website. They got some good deals on there and lot of them still come with xp or xp pro/media centre which is what I prefer as don't want vista. It's just that after reading their ad it says that all the laptops are either clearance stock or ones that have been returned by consumers within 28 days. I notice that the Acers, HP's and phillips are all sold out leaving only the packard bell and advent (same company) and Compaq. I don't want a packard bell or advent as have had 2 of their machines before and they were crap crap crap and don't tell me to try Dell. Are Compaq any good.

  1. i bought two advent laptops(form my daughters) about 3yrs ago on the same deal 1.6ghz proc 256mb ram 40gb harddrive with the model number 7086 iv,e had nothing but greive with it but 7090 is a cracking machine and never had a days fault. it,s like buying a used car and it runs fine while it,s under warranty but a few months after the trouble starts. compaq are only good if you have a deal for a buisness with them otherwise i would continue looking
  2. I have not tried refurbished from them try the svp website they have quite a few Dell laptops at very reasonable prices http://svp.co.uk/
  3. If, you want a Brand New Refurbished laptop then you can get one from Dell. Apple, Toshiba and Acer. Their definition of Refurbished is a scrstch on the exterior surface, a change in specification or a cancelled order. I do not, recommend Apple due to its pathetic three month warranty whereas with Dell you get the full one year factory warranty. Try www.dell.co.uk/outlet
  4. compac is owned by h/p but they are generally cheaper than h/p computers. i would imagine that compacs are just h/p computers that did'nt meet the standards to be sold with the h/p name.
  5. Refurbished laptops are good but not reliable. I mean, in issues of any hardware damage, then there is no gurantee of getting any support from the brand's tech support. Compaq has not much issues yet.
